Learning Objectives

What will students accomplish / be able to do at the end of this lesson?
The student will be able to understand Florida tourism and its effects on Florida’s economy.

The student will be able to identify the main tourist attractions on a map and label these places.

The student will understand the significance of St. Augustine and its importance to tourism.

The student will understand the significance of Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.

The student will have knowledge about how Walt Disney World impacts Florida’s economy.

The student will be able to explain why the Hemmingway house is important to the Florida Keys.

Students will be given a blank map of Florida and have to locate where Kennedy Space Center, Walt Disney World, St. Augustine, and the Hemmingway house on the map. They will also create a KWL of their prior knowledge about each place.

Each center has a major tourism impact on Florida. Students will rotate around the centers where they will learn a bit about each place and how it impacts Florida tourism. The students will be keeping a journal about their travels to each important place where they write
down what they learned and anything they want to research further.

Center 1: Kennedy Space Center
Step 1: Students will correctly locate Kennedy Space Center on the map
Step 2: Students will read an overview of NASA and discuss within their group about why it attracts people to visit Florida
Step 3: The students will write down their answers of why they think Kennedy Space Center is important to Florida

Center 2: St. Augustine
Step 1: Students will correctly locate St. Augustine on the map
Step 2: They will read a brief overview of St. Augustine’s history
Step 3: A discussion about Florida’s oldest city will be held within the group
Step 4: Students will write down what they learned and how the oldest city impacts Florida’s tourism.

Center 3: Walt Disney World
Step 1: Students will correctly locate WDW on the map
Step 2: Students will discuss if they have even been to Disney World
Step 3: Students will talk about how much they think for a family of four to go to the park costs, why people want to visit Disney World, and how it impacts the economy
Step 4: They will create a list of these reasons and give it to the teacher

Center 4: Key West
Step 1: Students will correctly identify Key West on the map
Step 2: Students will read the history of the Hemmingway house that is provided on the table
Step 3: They will discuss why it attracts tourist
Step 4: Students will write their answers on a sheet of paper and give it to the teacher when they have finished

At the end of the lesson, students will get back into their center groups and create a powerpoint that shows what they learned and how they what to teach the other students.

Be sure to include Pre/Post assessment in your lesson plans!
Pre-Assessment:
Students will try and label the places correctly on a Florida map and also create a KWL of what they previously know about each place and its impact.

Post-Assessment:
The
students will create a full KWL chart and a brochure about what is important about each place and why people want to visit it. The brochure and KWL show what the students learned about why these places are so important to Florida. A powerpoint will also be created to show what they learned and what they want to tell the other
students.

Discussion Notes

A letter will be sent home to the parents. Parents will be asked to bring in any artifacts/artifakes they might have for any of the important places in Florida. Parents and students can submit any ideas that they think would be
interesting that is relevant to the lesson plan.
